Long Haul Flight Essentials: Everything You Need in Your Carryon

Before we dive into the essentials, let’s first understand the concept of long-haul flights. These flights typically cover extensive distances, usually exceeding 6 hours, and involve crossing multiple time zones. The plane rides connect travelers to far-flung destinations, allowing them to explore incredible landscapes and vibrant cultures. Personally, I love flying on longer flights and feel like I’ve figured out the actual items that impact a “meh” flight from a great trip. From the bustling streets of New York City to the serene beaches of Bali, long-haul flights are the gateway to unforgettable adventures.

Now, let’s explore the top 10 long-haul flight essentials that will make your journey more comfortable and enjoyable:

  1. Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Block out the engine noise and enter your own world. Having music to zone out to on a flight is essential. For me, I like to have some sort of background music basically all the time. If I forget headphones, I make sure to at least ask for the free headphones from the flight attendants, but highly advise putting this item on the top of your packing list. While these are not the highest end or most expensive, I love my JBL Reflect headphones for all situations – running, lifting, cleaning, and flying. They have great battery life, never fall out, and are comfy and always reliable.
  2. Collapsible/Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the flight by bringing a collapsible or reusable water bottle. Remember to fill it up after security checks to quench your thirst whenever needed. Staying hydrated is essential to combat the dry cabin air and prevent fatigue.
  3. Neck Pillow: Realistically, if you’re on a long-haul flight you are inevitably going to sleep. Save yourself some neck pains by just investing in a neck pillow. Say goodbye to neck discomfort and hello to restful sleep with the TRTL travel pillow. Its ergonomic design ensures maximum comfort during those long hours of snoozing. The TRTL innovative travel pillow provides excellent neck support, allowing you to wake up refreshed upon arrival.
  4. Hand Sanitizer: Keep those pesky germs at bay with a travel-sized hand sanitizer. It’s a must-have, especially during flu seasons or when traveling to destinations with limited hygiene facilities. Having hand sanitizer handy has saved me in multiple scenarios when traveling so this goes beyond just flight essentials!
  5. Flight Socks: Even if your feet don’t normally get cold, somehow they always manage to on flights. Packing socks for your flight is super helpful. You can also choose to go with compression socks to combat the risk of swollen feet and improve blood circulation. These socks are a game-changer for long flights, keeping your legs fresh and comfortable. Compression socks also reduce the chances of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during extended periods of sitting.
  6. Eye Mask: Create your personal sanctuary by blocking out the cabin lights with a comfortable and snug eye mask. It’s the perfect way to catch some quality shut-eye, especially if you’re traveling through different time zones and need to adjust your sleep schedule. Investing in an eye mask is great to help get some zzz’s, but if you can’t get yourself to pull the plug, I love having a beanie (or winter hat) handy, so I can just pull it down over my eyes and ears!
  7. Portable Charger: When traveling, it’s always a drag or inconvenience in some way if one of your electronics die. Stay powered up throughout the flight by packing a portable charger. You can keep your gadgets entertained and stay connected, whether it’s browsing the web, listening to music, or working on important documents. As mentioned in my article “Backpacking for Beginners: How to Start Planning,” I trust this portable charger more than any other one I’ve used!
  8. Tooth brush and toothpaste: While this may seem odd, image morning breath right after waking up… yeah, these long haul flights are essentially that. Having a tooth brush handy after waking up from a four hour nap or to freshen up before landing always reminds me just how great it is to feel fresh and clean despite being stuck on a tiny plane. A lot of international airlines will have tooth brush sets as well – sometimes you just have to ask!
  9. Lip Balm and Moisturizer: Long flights can leave your skin feeling dry and dehydrated. Keep your lips and skin moisturized with a nourishing lip balm and hydrating moisturizer. Applying them throughout the flight will help maintain fresh, silky lips and skin!
  10. Antacid Tablets : With the significant change in elevation, gassy stomachs is no stranger to long flights, especially if you’ve had a beer or two pre-flight or are partaking during the flight. While I always like to have antacid tablets handy when I travel, I also always ensure I have some on my carryon in case I get a bad case of stomach cramps due to the altitude changes!

Reflecting on my own experiences traveling across continents, these long-haul flight essentials have been my trusted companions. Whether your looking over the serene landscapes of the Swiss Alps or the bright lights from India, these items have enhanced my comfort and made my flights more enjoyable.

Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you.

What to Do on a Long Flight: Tips to Pass Time

Now that we have our essentials covered, let’s explore some exciting activities to keep you entertained during those long hours in the air. As you sit down your flight, you’re suddenly graced with mandatory free time for you to fill. Here are five things you can do to make the most of your air travel time:

  1. Binge Watch Movies and TV Shows: Take advantage of the extensive in-flight entertainment options and catch up on the latest blockbusters or your favorite TV series. It’s the perfect time to indulge in some guilt-free screen time. Whether it’s in flight entertainment, or your own pre-downloaded entertainment, enjoying a good movie or show that you normally wouldn’t take the time to watch always ends up being a nice surprise. I personally love exploring movies and shows on international flights, as there’s usually a diverse array of entertainment from multiple countries.
  2. Read a Book or E-Book: Dive into a captivating novel or explore a non-fiction book that piques your interest. Long flights offer uninterrupted reading time, allowing you to delve into a literary adventure. I’m a book lover, so having my Kindle on a flight is a must for me. I like to download at least two books to my library ahead of the flight, just in case I happen upon a page-turner that I can’t put down and breeze right through it.
  3. Engage in Mindful Activities: Use the quiet atmosphere of the airplane cabin to engage in mindful activities like meditation or journaling. Reflect on your upcoming journey, set goals, or simply enjoy the present moment. I enjoy doing this through my travels and changing it up over time. For example, I wanted to brush up on my geography so I set the goal that every time I traveled (by flight or train), I drew out a map from destination A to B. This helped me gain such a broader perspective of time, distance, and overall geography that I began looking forward to it every time I traveled. If you want to try this out, I recommend grabbing a few screenshots of the map beforehand so you have a few points of references.
  4. Play Games: Challenge yourself or engage in friendly competition with fellow passengers by bringing along travel-sized board games or digital games on your device. Whether it’s card games, a challenging sudoko, or a crossword puzzle, games get your mind going and keep you engaged, which ultimately helps time pass. Growing up, I loved playing Pyramid when I traveled – it’s easy to learn and can be played over and over!
  5. Knock out Things from Your To Do List: If you’re a planner or love to do lists, utilize the uninterrupted flight time to knock out time-consuming things that you’ve been setting aside. Whether it’s compiling your expenses for work, writing thank you letters, or planning an event or other trip, you can use this quiet time to your advantage and feel super accomplished by the time you hit the ground.

Thinking back on countless long flights, I can’t help but appreciate the advancements in travel comfort and entertainment. From noise-cancelling headphones and expansive in-flight entertainment to learning geography through drawing, using these flight essentials to pack and pass my time in the air has transformed the way I experience long flights.

Conclusion

In conclusion, embarking on a long-haul flight doesn’t have to be daunting. By equipping yourself with the right essentials and engaging in enjoyable activities, you can turn those long hours in the air into a pleasant and productive experience. So, pack your noise-cancelling headphones, reusable water bottle, and travel pillow, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime. Bon voyage!
