Vatican Museum and Gardens of Vatican City

Our adventure began with a guided tour of the Vatican Museum. One of the best things Patrick and I did during our visit to the Vatican was to pay for a guided tour called “Extra Time – Sistine Chapel.” This exclusive tour offered us a unique opportunity to explore the Vatican Museum for two hours right before closing time, followed by private access to the renowned Sistine Chapel after closing. The tour also included a fabulous happy hour in the garden – all included within the ticket price of just $78/person.

Stepping through the Vatican Entrance on Via della Conciliazione, we were greeted by the awe-inspiring collections housed within the museum’s walls. As we strolled through the vast halls, adorned with precious artworks and ancient artifacts, our guide shared captivating stories about the museum’s history. We marveled at masterpieces by renowned artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, and Botticelli, soaking in the artistic grandeur that surrounded us.

If you knew how much work went into it, you wouldn’t call it genius.

As we went through our tour, we made our way to one of the main highlights of our visit—the Vatican Gardens. Nestled within the Vatican City walls, these enchanting gardens offer a serene escape from the bustling city streets. The Gardens of Vatican City are meticulously maintained, showcasing an exquisite blend of natural beauty and carefully curated landscapes.

As you step into the Vatican Gardens, there’s such a strong sense of tranquility. Lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and meticulously manicured hedges greeted are present at every turn. The gardens have been an integral part of Vatican City for centuries, serving as a place of solace for popes throughout history. They have even served as a summer residence, with Castel Gandolfo providing a refreshing retreat for pontiffs.

While we didn’t take the full tour of the Vatican Gardens, our guide told us of the gardens’ history, including the vision of Pope Nicholas III, who envisioned creating an earthly paradise within the Vatican walls. She gave us a preview of the winding paths, hidden fountains, Renaissance statues, and secret nooks that fills the Gardens of Vatican City.

As we neared the end of our tour, we couldn’t contain our excitement for the grand finale—the Sistine Chapel. Thanks to the tour we chose, we had the privilege of experiencing the renowned chapel in private. Stepping inside, our gaze was immediately drawn to the awe-inspiring ceiling adorned with Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes. It was a profoundly moving experience, being the first in our group to enter the chapel. It left us in awe of the masterful artistry and spiritual significance of this sacred space.
