As we embarked on this unforgettable journey, we found ourselves mesmerized by the rugged coastline, terraced vineyards, and lush Mediterranean vegetation that surrounded us. Each leg of the trail presented its own unique charm and challenges, with varying levels of difficulty. From the steep ascents and descents to the tranquil stretches along the azure waters, the enchanting landscapes make the Cinque Terre a hiker’s paradise. Along the way, you encounter picturesque viewpoints, quaint cafés, and hidden coves where you can take refreshing breaks to soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. Our first stop on this remarkable journey is the charming village of Manarola, Italy. As we stepped off the train at the Manarola train station, we were immediately greeted by the captivating scenery that defines this seaside gem. Known for its rich history as a fishing village, Manarola offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Cinque Terre. The colorful houses perched on the cliffside, overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea, created a picture-perfect backdrop for our adventure.

As we explored the narrow streets of Manarola, we couldn’t help but marvel at the preserved architecture and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The village is famous for its vibrant atmosphere, with lively bars, cafes, and restaurants offering delightful gastronomic experiences. We had the pleasure of dining at a charming restaurant called La Scogliera, where we savored the flavors of the region – I highly recommend this restaurant. One dish that left a lasting impression was the Spaghetti Alla Scogliera, or seafood pasta, made with the freshest catch from the Ligurian Sea. The combination of succulent seafood, al dente pasta, and a flavorful garlic sauce was a true taste of culinary heaven. We also loved the Mixed Anchovies Plate of Monterosso – I am now a converted anchovy fan it was so fresh and delicious.

Vernazza, Italy: Picturesque Harbor and Vibrant Atmosphere

Our exploration of the Cinque Terre continued to Vernazza, a town known for its picturesque harbor and lively atmosphere. As we strolled through its charming streets, we were captivated by the vibrant colors of the houses and the bustling piazza overlooking the sea. Vernazza has a rich maritime history and was once a powerful trading hub in the region.

The highlight of Vernazza is undoubtedly its enchanting harbor, where colorful fishing boats dot the turquoise waters. We sat at a waterfront café, sipping espresso and soaking in the lively atmosphere. We also hiked up to the Doria Castle, a medieval fortress that offers panoramic views of the village and the coastline. Vernazza’s charm and beauty left us awe-inspired and eager to explore more.

Corniglia, Italy: Perched High on a Hilltop

Perched high on a hilltop, the village of Corniglia offers a unique perspective on the Cinque Terre. Unlike the other towns, Corniglia is not directly accessible from the sea but can be reached by climbing a staircase or taking a shuttle bus. This isolation has preserved its tranquil atmosphere and allowed it to retain its authentic charm.

Corniglia is known for its terraced vineyards and agricultural traditions. We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the colorful houses adorned with flowers. The peacefulness of Corniglia provided a welcome respite, and we enjoyed savoring gelato from a local artisanal shop while taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It was a truly idyllic moment that captured the essence of this quiet town.

Riomaggiore, Italy: Colorful Houses Cascading Down the Cliffs

Our next destination was Riomaggiore, a village characterized by its colorful houses cascading down the cliffs towards the sea. Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the Cinque Terre towns and has a vibrant and lively atmosphere. As we arrived at the train station, we were immediately drawn to the bustling marina and the lively streets filled with shops, restaurants, and cafés.

Riomaggiore has a long history of fishing and winemaking, and its vineyards produce the famous Sciacchetrà wine. We explored the village’s charming alleyways and discovered hidden viewpoints that offered breathtaking vistas of the Ligurian coastline. The sunset from the harbor was truly mesmerizing, casting a warm glow over the pastel-colored houses and creating a romantic ambiance.

Monterosso, Italy: The Largest and Most Lively of the Cinque Terre

Our final stop in the Cinque Terre was Monterosso, the largest and most lively of the five towns. Right when you step off the train, you are welcomed by a beautiful sandy beach and a vibrant promenade lined with beachfront cafés and restaurants. Monterosso combines the charm of a seaside village with the conveniences of a modern tourist destination.

Monterosso is known for its beautiful beaches, making it a popular destination for sun-seekers. We spent a delightful day working out on the beach, enjoying the crystal-clear waters and soaking up the sun. The town also boasts a charming old town with narrow streets filled with shops selling local specialties such as pesto and limoncello. 

Cinque Terre La Spezia: Gateway to the Villages

During our Cinque Terre adventure, we chose to stay in the nearby city of La Spezia. We spent a week in La Spezia and were easily able to embark on day trips to each of the five Cinque Terre towns.This vibrant city serves as the gateway to the Cinque Terre Villages, offering convenient access to each town. With its lively streets, historical landmarks, and delightful waterfront promenade, La Spezia itself has its own unique charm. It’s a larger port city compared to the five towns, so doesn’t have as much charm as the Cinque Terre towns, but definitely serves as a great budget option for those wanting to stay in the Italian Riviera. 

Levanto, Italy: An Honorable Mention to the Cinque Terre Towns

Just a short distance away from the enchanting Cinque Terre towns lies the charming town of Levanto. While not part of the official Cinque Terre cluster, Levanto offers a delightful escape and serves as a gateway to this picturesque region. With its own unique allure, Levanto provides a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere compared to its neighboring towns. Boasting a beautiful sandy beach, Levanto is a haven for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts. The town’s historic center features narrow streets lined with colorful houses, inviting cafés, and local shops. Levanto also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking and biking trails that allow you to explore the stunning coastal scenery. Whether as a base for further Cinque Terre exploration or a tranquil seaside retreat, Levanto adds its own special charm to the itinerary, providing a wonderful blend of relaxation and adventure.
