Bormio is a small alpine town with a rich history dating back to ancient times. Located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, it lies in the province of Sondrio and is surrounded by the stunning peaks of the Italian Alps. Its strategic position along historic trade routes brought prosperity and a melting pot of cultures to the town. Today, Bormio embraces its past while offering modern amenities and a warm welcome to winter sports.

Bormio has gained worldwide recognition as a premier ski destination, drawing skiers of all levels with its varied terrain and impeccable snow conditions. The Bormio Ski, situated at an elevation of 1,950 meters (6,398 feet), provides access to over 50 kilometers (31 miles) of well-groomed slopes catering to different skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced skier, Bormio offers a thrilling playground for your winter adventures.

My First Skiing Adventure in Bormio: From Bunny Hill to Mountain Rescue

As first-time skiers, Patrick and I eagerly arrived in Bormio, ready to embrace the slopes and the pristine alpine beauty that awaited us. Being experienced climbers and athletic our whole life, we had a big curiosity to explore a side of the mountains we hadn’t yet conquered. Little did we know that this journey would not only introduce us to the world of skiing but also lead us to discover a hidden gem in Europe.

Unexpected Discoveries: Bormio, a Cheap Place to Ski in Europe

As we initially researched skiing in Europe, we came across Livigno Ski and had originally intended to book a ski vacation in the more popular area of Livigno. However, a serendipitous mistake led us to book our stay in Bormio instead, thinking it was the same area. Little did I realize that this error would turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as I discovered that Bormio offers an incredible skiing experience in the absolute cutest town with so much character. We fell in love with the cobblestone roads, small local restaurants and amazing people in Bormio.

We booked the best Airbnb that was walking distance to everything in town and a 10 minute walk to Bormio skiing. We also booked our ski passes beforehand through Bormio Ski. Yes, I should have realized we weren’t in Livigno then, whoops! Once we were in Bormio, we simply walked up to Bormio Ski 2000 to book our lessons and rentals.

Lessons on the Slopes

We booked our ski lessons in Bormio with Bormio Ski School and then rented from their shop called Rino Sport which is located at Bormio 2000. We loved all of the instructors, and workers and felt like we got a true Italian experience learning from their crew. Our instructor, Flavio, was patient and experienced in guiding beginners and having a positive attitude, and we learned the basics of balance, turning, and stopping, gaining confidence throughout the lesson. Although we may have gained too much confidence…

An Unexpected Twist: A Snowmobile Rescue

We explored the bunny hill and with each successful descent, our confidence grew, and the joy of skiing became more tangible. Motivated by our progress, we decided to hop on the lift to try a more challenging route. As we rose higher upon the mountain up to Bormio 3000, we realized there’s a great chance that we overestimated our abilities. With people flying by with ease, we figured we must go down!

However, as we started to descend the steep mountain, it’s like all my training went out the door. As Patrick zoomed through, I kept up by managing a few good moves and a lot of treacherous falls. Next thing I knew, I was struggling to navigate the unforgiving mountain terrain. We reached the Ski Chalet, about a third of the way down and being in a delirious, scared state of mind, I insisted on pausing to have a beer. Patrick had worry across his face as my adrenaline surged through and kept my attitude positive, however I was absolutely scared out of my mind. So scared, I called my mom on top of the mountain just to say hello… and find some confidence to finish the route. As we left the Ski Chalet, my descent did not improve and fear continued to creep in. Within less than 5 minutes of leaving and as I was planted on my behind after another lovely fall, the ski patrol team, always ready to ensure the safety of skiers, promptly arrived on a snowmobile to rescue us. While the experience was humbling, it served as a reminder of the importance of respecting the mountains and the expertise of the professionals who safeguard the slopes. I will say though, being rescued on a snowmobile at sunset wasn’t the worst experience in the world.

The Enchanting Town of Bormio

Beyond the ski slopes, Bormio exudes a captivating charm with its quaint streets, historic buildings, and welcoming atmosphere. Take a stroll through the town center, where centuries-old architecture blends seamlessly with modern cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes, savoring the delicious local cuisine and indulging in a warm cup of espresso.

One of my favorite places in Bormio is this tiny little bakery called Panini Marinoni IL FORNO. I would go every morning right when they opened to snag their freshly baked, warm chocolate croissants for just 1 euro. Absolute heaven!

Relaxation in Bormio’s Hot Springs

One of Bormio’s highlights is its natural hot springs, renowned for their therapeutic properties. Bormio has multiple hot springs to offer, but we indulged in a day pass at Bormio Terme for 22 euro each. We were able to immerse in the warm, mineral-rich waters, enjoy their sauna and steam rooms. It was totally worth it, plus the view of the surrounding mountains was incomparable. It’s a rejuvenating experience that adds a touch of luxury to your ski getaway.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

For those seeking additional skiing adventures, Bormio offers easy access to other nearby ski resorts. Consider venturing to Livigno Ski Resort, known for its vast ski area and lively après-ski scene. With its duty-free status, Livigno also offers fantastic shopping opportunities. Another option is Santa Caterina Valfurva, a charming resort nestled amidst stunning natural beauty, offering a quieter and more intimate skiing experience.
